How to Choose an Engineering College

I have worked as Principal of Two Reputed Engineering Colleges of Pune. I came across many concerned Parents, who were bit confused in figuring out a Good College and Engineering Stream for their wards. Based on their queries and my experiences with my fellow students, I have listed below some of important factors which should be considered while makeing selection of an Engineering College.

Choosing a College one should pay attention to the Below Given Details:

(1) Read the information given in the brochure provided by the Respective Technical Education Directorates in their respective states (in Maharashtra it is DTE - Mumbai and in Gujarat it is ACPC - Ahmedabad).

(2) Explore the respective College Websites, for "Mandatory Disclosure". If the college has not disclosed the proper information, report to respective Authorities of States (e.g. DTE - Mumbai, ACPC - Gujarat, etc...)

(3) Go through their Approval Details. Find out the approval details of your preferred course. Please, Keep in Mind that unapproved courses may be forced to close down at any point of time by governments.

(4) Study the Faculty profiles, especially of Principal or director and Head of the departments.

(5) It is very essential to have a personal visit to the shortlisted colleges (on working day only - Not during vacations). In college, one should explore or find the following details:

(A) College Management, Their Effectiveness as an Administration and Their Track record,

(B) College Principal and His or Her Reputation,

(C) Details of Department to which you are thinking of getting admission, like, its Head, faculty, Non-teaching Infrastructure and facilities, Teaching infrastructure like Laboratories, workshops, Library, etc. Find out How many of faculty members are Ph. D. holders (Though having a Ph. D. degree does not endorse that one is good teacher, still, to some extent, it helps to work out the quality levels of Department.).

(D) Research Activities undertaken by faculty members and students, Involvement of Industry (Like, Techno-economic Support, Experimentation on live processes of business, etc.) in such activities. Publication and recognition of Research work in the form of papers published in the different Journals, presentations in the conferences at national and international level events.

(E) Performance and consistency of the students in the University Exams. Find out how many students ranked in the top 10 at the university level in the last 3 years.

(F) Fees structure of the college should be proportional to the reputation and infrastructure of the college.

Protect Yourself from Pitfalls:

Below given details of an institute impress you to a great extent. However, choosing an institution only on the basis of any one or two of them and ignoring the above given points, could be a pitfall:

(1) Eye catching Infrastructure, like, the college building and surroundings are highly impressive (Take a look at the college laboratories, class rooms and toilets, not just walls and windows).

(2) College name appears in various news media and ranking surveys,

(3) The college engages itself in organizing Mega Events (like, Sports Tournaments, Students Gatherings, etc.) with budget more than 5 million Rupees, takes nearly 4-5 months organizational work by the college faculty and staff, which is likely to cause negligence towards academics.

Engineering Branch:

All engineering stream are good enough to provide better career opportunity. Gender bias should not be criteria while selecting course of engineering studies. In order to secure a good job one has to be consistently achieving First Class or Division and all University Exams. Such consistent results reflect the ability of a candidate to deliver consistently against a given task, and that is what is expected by all reputed companies from their applicants.
